Dermal infections involve the dermis, the dense inner layer of skin under the epidermis. These skin wound infections are caused by environmental microorganism invasio, and the symptoms and severity of the infection vary according to whether the treatment is timely, the types of pathogens that invade and the degree of immune response caused. In severe cases, skin infections can progress to the underlying soft tissues or become systemic infections. Among them, deep wound infections caused by injury or surgery usually lead to persistent chronic infections, but are difficult to treat due to multi-drug resistance and biofilm formation. Therefore, the market has a great demand for specific drugs to combat deep wound infections. The premise for studying wound infections and testing new treatments is a meaningful model system. Currently, mouse, guinea pig, rat and rabbit models are the most commonly used in vivo models for these studies. They also are valuable tools for elucidating the mechanism of wound infection.

Creative Diagnostics has established several animal models of wound infections using Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including the use of bioluminescent strains for in-life analysis of bacterial infections at the wound site. The wound can be cut by enumerating CFU (A colony-forming unit, it is a unit used in microbiology to estimate the number of viable bacteria or fungal cells in a sample.) in homogeneous tissue to determine the bacterial load, and biopsy tissue can be removed for pathological examination.
We have established models of deep wound infection in mice, guinea pigs, rats and rabbits. Among them, taking mice as an example, we first used a biopsy punch to form a 6mm deep wound on the back surface of the thoracic spine of the mouse, and then directly inoculated the test bacteria on the wound surface to form an infected deep wound model. After that, the tested candidate compound can be injected into the mouse body by topical, intragastric, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal or intravenous injection, and then observe and analyze it to evaluate the antibacterial effect of the candidate. Each research parameter (animal strains, pathogens, comparators and dosing schedules, etc.) in the process can be customized to perfectly meet all the needs of the customer's research project.
